Switching Gears…

June 28, 2009

Today I sat down to answer the age old question: How broke am I? Well, it turns out pretty broke. I have a serious problem: I like spending a lot of money……especially on travel. “Ohh you need someone to go to Paris with you? Sure I’ll go!!!”

My location independent lifestyle affords me the ability to do what I want, when I want. So I do that and I end up spending a lot of money. Not so good. I’ve pretty much spent all that I’ve earned this year, which isn’t good. Next week, I meet with my accountant to figure out how I’m going to pay my taxes and what I am going to owe. I’m also going to figure out how to write off my travels as a business expense…I mean after all, I run travel websites and all.

Realizing that if I don’t save any money soon my trip to Europe is not gonna go as smoothly, I’ve decided to shelve some of my trips around the US while I am. I’m going use the fact I’m staying with my parents to really start saving money. No more freewheeling spending. Sticking to the budget.

I leave for Europe on August 23rd and by then I want to save 5,000 dollars as a rainy day fun. That way in case I have any dip in income, I’ll have some money. It’s also a wake up call that, maybe I should go and spend all my money. I’m at the point in life where I should have a savings. I don’t. Maybe it’s time to do one adult thing….

Back Home Again..for now

June 18, 2009

Well, I’ve been home for four days now. The culture shock has yet to hit in though. Mostly, I’ve caught up on about 11 months of sleep I missed, had many a doctor appointment (I’m healthy, no cavities, got a bit more near sighted), and been catching up on work. So I have yet to really venture out and adjust (I did get to taco bell! rest easy now people!). I suspect the culture shock will really hit me when I head to D.C. tomorrow to meet some friends, go to a wedding, and meet Tanya from Parisian Spring. Out and about in the culture, I’m going to be freaked out.

I’m already weirded out by the big cares and huge roads. And it did take me a few minutes to remember which coins had which value to them! lol.

But home is going to be a busy time. I only plan on being here for about two months and I have a lot to do in that two months.

I need to:

a) stabilize my income a bit more to ensure I start to actually save more than I spend!

b) Get so far ahead of my work that when I go backpack again, I can have fun and not work so much.

c) Start planning my next backpacking trip. I need to work on the rough outline of my trip to Europe and book my accommodation for La Tomatina and Oktoberfest.

d)head to the Travel Blog Exchange Conference in Chicago

e) find my way to NYC, LA, San Fran, and points unknown

f) Have a high school reunion

g) find time in all of that to see my friends!

It’s going to be an action packed 2 months.

The End is Near..

…and it’s time to be on my way…

Leaving Bangkok…Again

June 4, 2009

I’m leaving Bangkok in two days and I’m a bit saddened by it. I was just starting to get into the groove of living here again and now I have to leave. It’s sad. I’ve been Asia since last August and I love it here. Asia is great- I love the crazy feel and the great food and the wild parties and the energy of the area.

Now I have to go home. It’s going to be weird. There’s going to be so many…white people. That’s going to be weird. Lots of white people. I haven’t been around lots of white people in awhile. Moreover, everyone in the starts is going to be going on and on and on about the economy. Blah blah blah. How depressing. I watched ten minutes of CNN and I felt dumber for watching it.

I’m going to be bored too. Every night is a night out in Bangkok but back in Boston, a Tuesday is a Tuesday in front of the tv. Here it is like twenty networking events.

I am excited to eat at all the restaurants I missed back home. Especially taco bell!! Mmmmmm taco bell. Crappy food but yummy. Then all the sushi places, pizza joints, and sub shops. Mmmm yummy.

Also it will be nice to see my friends again and catch up with them. It will be good to see what happened to them in the last year.

I also plan on taking lots of little trips around the country to LA, Seattle, Chicago, and NYC. It’s gonna be fun to take all these little trips.

But until then it’s off to KL for two days before I go to the UK and spend 5 days in Scotland celebrating my birthday next Friday.
