What’s Going On in My Life

November 27, 2009

Somethings require a different blog….like life updates….so going on my life:

I’m going to New Zealand next week. I’ll be there until about January 18th and then, as planned, I’ll still go to Australia to explore queensland and take care of some business in Melbourne. I also managed to get myself a free Kiwi Experience pass for my trip around the country. I might also try to get a Stray Travel pass too. I hear the Kiwi experience is full of college kids who want to party and while I enjoy a good party, I’m not sure I’ll want 45 days of it. However, like any good journalist, I must investigate so I can accurately report back to my readers.

Even though I said I am not going to use Blogsherpa, I’m testing it out again with photos and blog posts I don’t want to rank on google for. They made some changes to the program so I’m checking to see if I can get any consistent bump in traffic. Results are inconclusive right now. I’ll report back again in a month.

I’m also using Facebook ads to see if I can get people to my fanpage. Results are complete failure. I’m still playing with it though to see if I can hit upon a demographic that works. So far females from the US between the ages of 18-24 click through the most. There is so much potential in Facebook I’m going to make this work. Expect a long blog post on it when I am finished. I suspect when I give away a trip to Costa Rica in January, I’ll have more success with that. But I’m not going to give any more details about that….just yet.

I’m also going to try FB ads for my ebooks.

I’m also trying LP thorntree. While it is possibly the worst forum in the world, there is just so much ridiculous traffic there I’m seeing if I can up my clicks and traffic from there. I mean each posting, no matter how crappy, gets like 500 views. There has to be a use for it! Reports on that later.

I also wrote a new ebook on how to create a travel blog. Take a look. It’s only four dollars.

In non web work related news, I’m excited to go to NZ to meet Craig and Linda from Indietravelpodcast and see some old friends who live in Christchurch. I’m obsessed with the British band La Roux.

I’ll be speaking at TBEX ’10 next June. If you are a travel blogger or just someone with an interest, you should come. Last years event was the first time there was a “travel blogger” conference and this year’s event looks like it is going to be even better. It’s two days with a lot of workshops and talks. Come!

I have two other big big big big projects in the works but I want to keep those a secret. All I will say is one involves helping travel bloggers get free stuff and the other involves sending someone on the trip of a life time.

Other than that besides working, traveling, and buying bootleg movies in Bangkok, I lead a boring life and don’t do much else. Sorry for the boring blog update.

Ohh but I was named one of the ten sexiest twitterers…I should put that on my business card!

Back Home Again..for now

June 18, 2009

Well, I’ve been home for four days now. The culture shock has yet to hit in though. Mostly, I’ve caught up on about 11 months of sleep I missed, had many a doctor appointment (I’m healthy, no cavities, got a bit more near sighted), and been catching up on work. So I have yet to really venture out and adjust (I did get to taco bell! rest easy now people!). I suspect the culture shock will really hit me when I head to D.C. tomorrow to meet some friends, go to a wedding, and meet Tanya from Parisian Spring. Out and about in the culture, I’m going to be freaked out.

I’m already weirded out by the big cares and huge roads. And it did take me a few minutes to remember which coins had which value to them! lol.

But home is going to be a busy time. I only plan on being here for about two months and I have a lot to do in that two months.

I need to:

a) stabilize my income a bit more to ensure I start to actually save more than I spend!

b) Get so far ahead of my work that when I go backpack again, I can have fun and not work so much.

c) Start planning my next backpacking trip. I need to work on the rough outline of my trip to Europe and book my accommodation for La Tomatina and Oktoberfest.

d)head to the Travel Blog Exchange Conference in Chicago

e) find my way to NYC, LA, San Fran, and points unknown

f) Have a high school reunion

g) find time in all of that to see my friends!

It’s going to be an action packed 2 months.

The End is Near..

…and it’s time to be on my way…

Leaving Bangkok…Again

June 4, 2009

I’m leaving Bangkok in two days and I’m a bit saddened by it. I was just starting to get into the groove of living here again and now I have to leave. It’s sad. I’ve been Asia since last August and I love it here. Asia is great- I love the crazy feel and the great food and the wild parties and the energy of the area.

Now I have to go home. It’s going to be weird. There’s going to be so many…white people. That’s going to be weird. Lots of white people. I haven’t been around lots of white people in awhile. Moreover, everyone in the starts is going to be going on and on and on about the economy. Blah blah blah. How depressing. I watched ten minutes of CNN and I felt dumber for watching it.

I’m going to be bored too. Every night is a night out in Bangkok but back in Boston, a Tuesday is a Tuesday in front of the tv. Here it is like twenty networking events.

I am excited to eat at all the restaurants I missed back home. Especially taco bell!! Mmmmmm taco bell. Crappy food but yummy. Then all the sushi places, pizza joints, and sub shops. Mmmm yummy.

Also it will be nice to see my friends again and catch up with them. It will be good to see what happened to them in the last year.

I also plan on taking lots of little trips around the country to LA, Seattle, Chicago, and NYC. It’s gonna be fun to take all these little trips.

But until then it’s off to KL for two days before I go to the UK and spend 5 days in Scotland celebrating my birthday next Friday.

A Lot of Life

May 13, 2009

First off, I finished my ebook. I really pounded away at it and got it done. Thanks to everyone who helped! You can read about it here: http://www.nomadicmatt.com/travel-blogs/make-money-with-your-blog/ but it’s not free. the ebook is 27 dollars but I’ll tell you it is highly worth it! read all the great feedback so far!

Think of it as a way to support all my hard work 🙂

I;m currently in Ko Samet, an island a few hours outside of Bangkok where it is raining. It rained yesterday too. Tomorrow is my last day and I hope it doesnt rain then.  Im going to fly down to Phuket this weekend for 6 days to hopefully get some sun. I can’t go back home pasty white! I refuse! worst comes to worst, i’ll go down to the perhentian islands in Malaysia for a few days before I fly back home.

I picked up a second SEO client. That makes two. I’d like one more…in fact, all I have room for is one more.  So if you are interested, I have good rates 🙂  But I’m excited I have two clients now.

There is a lot of travel coming up for me.  On the 24th I am going to Singapore for a few days.  My visa runs out here and I need to hop the border for a new visa and Singapore is the place to do it. I look forward to eating indian food with my hands again.

A few weeks after that I fly to Scotland where I celebrate turning old…then back to America for a little while. That’s a bit scary. America is a strange place.

There’s a lot going on but I’m glad to be finally moving around again.

A Month Gone By

April 4, 2009

How quickly life has changed from the last post.

I am no longer with that Austrian girl. Miscommunication has killed the radio star. We had a rocky finish but we’re sailing a bit smoother now. Not gonna drag out the details but, I was on the losing end.

I quit my job. Getting a visa was complex. They gave me the wrong the visa in Thailand and to get the right visa plus the paperwork and such it would cost another 200 dollars. No thanks for a job I am going to stay in until June. So when the visa expires on April 24th, I am off to Thailand, Bali, and….drumroll please…..TURKMENISTAN!!

Who goes there? No one! So I get some undiscovered country to explore. Maybe I can swing a paid gig out of it. Have to make some calls to some connections. My buddy in the Marines there is getting me the visa since they don’t give them out to single travelers. So I’ll fly from Bangkok and spend about 10 days there. Should be interested. Apparently, since it is a police state, is pretty safe.

The last Google PR update left me with some sites moving up which means I can go sell advertising on them. Let’s see if my theory on making money online works or not. If not, I’m gonna have to find a real job! No thanks to that!!!

And finally, those little rug rats at the school got me sick. I feel like death now. I hate being sick.

Bangkok, the city of Tequila

February 26, 2009

Last weekend, I went to Bangkok. I really love the cheap airfare there. I might start going like once a month. I stayed with my friend Matt who works for the aussie embassy. They hook it up!! He had like a super condo all paid for, a driver, a maid….it was great. I quite enjoyed staying there. I spent most of my weekend sleeping. My friends and I went out really late and kept feeding me tequila shots. Saturday is a haze of pool parties, naked swimming, after hour clubs, and dancing. Needless to say, I was pretty unproductive but I did have fun….from what I remember. And, I know mom and dad read this, so don’t worry- I did not end up bruised or broken nor did I get sick.

I got my Taiwan visa in a day though it was really expensive (150 US) to get same day service. I did go to my favorite indian place. They love me there and now I get a discount when I go. 20% off….sweeeeeeet. I bought bootleg movies and ate amazing Thai food. I was glad to finally get some good food.

Have a mentioned the food here sucks? B/c Taiwanese food is crap. And not cheap. I’m hoping my new websites take off soon so I can take weekend trips to places with good food. I smell Tokyo in my future.

Now I am back in Taipei and squirreling away my cash. I’m trying hard to make my fortune online and I am doing a lot of interesting things right now. I’ll see a payoff around April and May. So it is all work and some play for me.

Life moves forward….
